License types
“Activated” does not mean the license works the same way
A new device, a new motherboard, or leaving an employer ends these four licenses differently. Pick one.
Retail
A key you bought, or a license redeemed from a retailer.
- What it is tied to
- The key itself is not tied to hardware. After it becomes a digital license, it follows the Microsoft account used to redeem it.
- After a hardware change
- The same account can usually activate a new device, though an extra verification step may appear.
- How long it lasts
- There is no expiry date. It is a one-time license.
- How to confirm it
- slmgr /dlv shows Retail. The Activation page shows a linked account.
- Typical case
- A personal purchase, or an upgrade bought separately.

- 2Then see what the license is tied to: an account, a motherboard, or an organization’s host.
- 3Only then ask whether it can move to a new device. The answer depends on that tie.
